Sessions: What to Expect

Each Session begins off the body with heart and nervous system connection work. I use my voice, breath and energy to offer connection before touch. I observe the horse’s standing and moving posture and take note of any areas that appear to be tense and potentially affecting movement.

When the horse indicates through their body language that they are open to being touched, I then ask questions through gentle touch and gentle movement and invite responses. The session flows from there and is customized to that horse and their human. No two sessions are the same.

I have no expectations for any specific answer or outcome. I observe how the horse is presenting in the moment as I take in the environmental factors going on around us. I then ask questions to help further explore what the horse needs to feel safe and find some enjoyment in our time together.

Completion of an email History/Current Questionnaire about the individual horse(s) and human I will be working with prior to the date of our session really helps with developing a framework for the session and lets me know about issues that may need special consideration.

My sessions are collaborative with the horse and their human. The human is a very important part of the emotional regulation work during the session as well as after I have left, practicing homework to integrate what we have uncovered as well as ways to improve the overall posture and movement of the horse.

Equipment needed

Flat halter - web, leather, biothane…, rope halters with knots are not suited for my work. I will bring several different lengths of lead rope to experiment with. I do not use any kind of whip, stick, cane, or flag in my sessions. I bring a bin of various gentle tools for proprioceptive work to get the horse thinking and sensing more about specific body areas.

Positive Reinforcement in Sessions

I have significant experience with Positive Reinforcement food skills and often use hay pellets or chopped hay to mark and reinforce the movement practice portion with permission from the owner as I do not use escalating pressure. I will bring food with me and we can make a mutual decision based on the horse’s nervous system and owner preferences.

Session Spaces

For the first session, I prefer a fenced quiet space to work where the horse can move. For horses with a history of fear or assertive behavior towards practitioners, I will start by working through a fence or over a stall door. Typically by the 2nd session, we can work in many different spaces.
